St Matthew's welcomes Rev John Hartman as our priest.
The Reverend John Hartman was called to ordained ministry late in
life, ordained by the Right Reverend Paul Marshall, Bishop of the Episcopal
Diocese of Bethlehem in September 2009. In June 2008, he was ordained a
Deacon by the Right Reverend George Councell, Bishop of the Episcopal
Diocese of New Jersey. He received his Master’s Degree in Divinity in 2008
from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.
Father John was called as the Ninth Rector of Grace Episcopal
Church in Kingston, Pennsylvania in October 2009. Prior to this calling he served as the Director of Church Relations for Seamen’s Church Institute in New York City, and as Deacon at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New
Providence, New Jersey.
Prior to entering the priesthood, Father John worked for over 35
years in the not-for-profit sector and served in development positions for the Boy Scouts of America, the National Audubon Society, and the Volunteers of America. He also served as the President of the Design Industries Foundation for AIDS, and Executive Director of the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, and the American Ethical Union.
Father John is a native of Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS DuPont (DD 941) and also in Washington, D.C. He retired as Rector of Grace in June 2020 and moved to Richmond, VA where he resides
with his Golden Retriever, Gracie.
